acupuncture in galway

There is strong research evidence for the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture. Other more general effects of acupuncture such as for weight loss or medical conditions have weaker evidence to support them.

At Evidence-Based Therapy Centre in Galway, Acupuncturist Eoin Ó Conaire has over 10 years’ experience treating patients with acupuncture to help reduce pain and he is a member of the Chartered Physiotherapists in Acupuncture special interest group.

Acupuncture has been around for over 3000 years and originated in China. Over the years the clinical experts that developed and refined the techniques of acupuncture that we use today used various folk explanations to outline how sticking needles into the body brought about therapeutic effects. You will often hear people talking about balancing energy channels and the meridians of the body.

At Evidence-Based Therapy Centre, we respect the huge body of historical work that has led to the development of modern acupuncture. In fact all of the modern-day acupuncture points were developed by these great gurus. However as scientist-practitioners, we now use our modern understanding of anatomy, physiology and pain mechanisms to explain how acupuncture works. If you have a course of acupuncture, your therapist will explain to you how needle stimulation can bring about reduction in pain levels through neurophysiological processes. In addition we don’t usually use acupuncture in isolation. It is best used as a method of reducing pain and providing a window of opportunity to rehabilitate an injury or condition.
