Therapeutic yoga classes in Galway

The therapeutic yoga class is a 50 minute yoga class designed for people with persistent pain, illness, or recovering from injury. Basic yoga poses (asana) will be introduced with a focus on improving ease of movment, balance, postural alignment and strength. Restorative poses (supported reclined postures) and breathwork will be incorporated to help reduce muscular tension, enhance relaxation and support emotional wellbeing.

What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual discipline that incorporates movement, breathing and meditation. There are many different styles of yoga including hatha, vinyasa/flow, ashtanga, yin, restorative, iyengar, bikram etc. all of which have their own distinct features.

The therapeutic yoga class will be a hatha style class, with a gentle and restorative approach to movement and recovery. In essence, this means the class will be based on gentle yoga postures with simple breathing exercises. The yoga postures will be adapted as needed to allow the class to be accessible for all participants.

Who should attend a therapeutic yoga class?

This class is designed for those looking for a gentle yet effective option to increase activity; particularly when living with a chronic condition or recovering from illness or injury. It is ideal for individuals for whom yoga classes in the community are perhaps too demanding or intimidating. A therapeutic yoga class offers the reassurence that alternative movement/posture options will be provided as needed, to ensure that you are working within your own capacity. The yoga practice will be accessible for you and suited to your condition.

Class details

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings 5.30pm – 6.20pm and Thursday lunchtimes 1.10pm – 2pm.

Prices are €120 for a block of 8 sessions. The assessment is offered at a reduced rate of €50 for the session.

Classes at EBTC have small numbers to ensure close supervision. Pauline has experience working as an Occupational Therapist responsible for the rehabiliation of individuals with medical conditions, chronic illnesses and traumatic orthopaedic injuries. She has completed post-graduate education on the evidenced-based approaches for individuals with persistent pain. She is trained as a yoga teacher; thus has the skills and knowledge to facilitate a specialised therapeutic yoga class.

It is essential that everyone who attends the class undergoes a full assessment to ensure you are suitable to participate in a therapeutic class and will benefit from attending. This initial one-off session also allows the occupational therapist to identify your individual needs and ascertain what you want to gain from attending a yoga class series.

Why is it important to complete an initial assessment prior to joining the therapeutic yoga class?

The assessment session is an essential element of the process for many reasons:

  • The individual assessment allows Pauline to ascertain your medical history, current functional status and your concerns to ensure that you are safe and appropriate to enter the class.
  • It provides an opportunity to discuss your goals, and the development of a plan to work toward these.
  • The assessment allows Pauline to introduce some of the basic yoga poses and to trial specific adaptations of the pose. This allows you to experiece a variety of positioning options to determine what feels best for you, prior to starting the class.
  • Certain yoga poses may be contraindicated (i.e. not suitable for use) with specific health conditions. The initial assessment allows Pauline to identify certain positions which are not recommended for you to complete and provide you with suggestions of alternative position options for your yoga practice.
  • The 1:1 assessment session enables you to proceed with confidence, sure in the knowledge that the yoga class is a beneficial choice for you and is individualised to your needs.
