BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, MISCP

Experienced Physiotherapist in Galway

Early Career

Since graduating as a physiotherapist with first class honours from the University of Bradford in 2004, Edel has gained a huge breadth of experience working in a variety of clinical inpatient and outpatient settings in the NHS, privately and in sport. She completed her core junior physiotherapy rotations at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitals Trust, gaining valuable experience working within the limb reconstruction team, upper/lower limb trauma and spinal triage service. In Liverpool, Edel was also lucky to work alongside some fantastic and well renowned specialist therapists, including those who run the world renowned Liverpool Upper Limb Unit.

Specialism in Musculoskeletal physiotherapy

In 2007, Edel then progressed on to work as a senior therapist within the musculoskeletal field and has been developing this specialist interest ever since. This varied from large hospital outpatient settings to smaller satellite clinics and private clinics in Manchester and Limerick. Here she gained valuable experience working with a very diverse caseload, from elite athletes and musicians/dancers to pregnant women and the older population. This also involved participation in the cover of a local rugby team, university triage clinics and Special Olympics Ireland (June 2010). During this time, she co-wrote an article for CSP Ireland on the management of common shoulder problems in the primary care setting, which was published in The Irish Medical Times 2012.

Recent Career

In more recent years, Edel has been employed by BMI Healthcare in Manchester and has gained extensive specialist experience in the acute to late stage management of all types of orthopaedic and spinal surgeries and procedures, including knee ligament reconstructions, hip and ankle arthroscopies, joint replacements, spinal discectomy and decompression, shoulder stabilisations, hydrodistension injection for frozen shoulder and rotator cuff repairs. Edel had the opportunity to work very closely with some very experienced and specialist surgeons and therapists and was able to observe and be involved in the rehabilitation of new and cutting edge surgeries like endoscopic spinal discectomy, scapular fusion and capsular reconstructions of the shoulder.

Management roles

Edel also gained valuable management experience, both in her previous role as a clinic manager and in her role at BMI as one of the most senior staff members. She was involved in the development and running of the department shoulder service and also the Stockport Spinal Service, commissioned by the NHS, roles that involved staff training and mentoring, various service development projects and research audits. Most recently, there has been a focus on the design and implementation of evidence-based shoulder advice leaflets, post-operative guidelines and development of a pre-operative arthroplasty service. In addition to this, she was involved in the development of the hospital shockwave therapy service, setting up of a specialist clinic for running injuries and leading post-operative lower limb rehab classes.

Continuous professional development

Over the years, Edel has attended numerous relevant specialist courses, conferences and seminars as well as being actively involved in the design and implementation of specialist teaching and training of other staff members, including specialist surgeon and radiologist teaching sessions. She keeps up to date with the literature and also regularly listens to physiotherapy podcasts and webinars as well as specific research for the more challenging cases she comes across.

Special Interests

Edel has a special interest in shoulders and spines, including peripheral nerve injury but also enjoys post-operative rehabilitation and biomechanical conditions of the lower limb.

Approach to Rehabilitation

Edel enjoys getting to know her patients and believes that the first step in getting somebody better is to understand their perceptions and expectations of their particular problem. This enables her to design a bespoke plan for each individual patient based on their day to day lifestyle and sport/hobbies. She likes problem-solving and clinical reasoning to really establish the root cause and deal with the longer term management as well as providing symptom relief. Edel is highly personable, friendly and approachable.

In her home life, Edel relocated home to Galway in June 2021 after living in the UK for the bulk of the previous twenty years. She is Mum to two young boys and enjoys going on adventures in the great outdoors, water sports, travelling, yoga and Latin dancing.
