Background

Emma is an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with a strong academic foundation and extensive NHS clinical experience, spanning primary care, national specialist services and inpatient settings. Having recently relocated to Galway, Emma brings over a decade of experience working in mental health services. Emma offers evidence-based therapies with a welcoming and compassionate stance and is passionate about person-centred care. Emma is dedicated to adapting therapy to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Therapeutic Approach

Emma’s therapeutic approach is rooted in evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). While firmly rooted in CBT, Emma takes an integrative and trauma-informed approach, drawing on a range of therapeutic techniques tailored to her clients’ individual needs. This flexibility allows her to meet clients ‘where they are’ and navigate the therapy journey together. Emma has particular expertise in adapting therapy for neurodiverse individuals and strives to create an inclusive and affirming space for all clients. Emma’s therapeutic style is collaborative, compassionate and located in the belief that meaningful change happens when clients feel safe, heard, and empowered.

Qualifications and Experience

Emma’s academic journey began in New Zealand, where she earned both a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Psychology before obtaining a Masters in Developmental Sciences from Birkbeck, University of London and the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Interventions (CBT) from the University of Surrey. Emma’s professional development has continued through specialised training in eating disorders, and she has completed training in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) through King’s College London. Emma’s career has included working with a diverse range of individuals, from people living with eating disorders to individuals living with anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and neurodiverse individuals.

Specialist Expertise

  • Eating Disorders: Emma’s previous role was CBT Therapist and lead of the early intervention (FREED) pathway within the outpatient eating disorders service at the Maudsley Hospital – where many of the eating disorder therapies were developed. In this role, Emma gained expertise in many NICE recommended therapies including CBT-E (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders), MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults), and specialist training and supervision in delivering FT/AN-EA (Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa in Emerging Adults). In this role Emma also provided clinical supervision and leadership within the large multidisciplinary team.
  • Neurodiversity: With a strong background in work with neurodiverse individuals in a variety of settings including at the National Adult Autism & ADHD Psychology Service at the Maudsley Hospital, Emma has significant experience in the identification of, and adaptations of, therapies for neurodiverse individuals. Emma is passionate about helping clients to manage challenges, but also supporting individuals to identify and utilise strengths that may be associated with their neurodiversity.
  • Trauma, anxiety, OCD and low mood: Emma has extensive experience in treating anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and low mood using a variety of approaches such as CBT, Compassion-Focussed Therapy and DBT.
  • Identity: Emma has a wealth of experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. She is open, compassionate and seeks to provide a non-judgemental space where individuals can explore aspects of their identity. Emma provides LGBT+ affirming care.
  • Supervision and Training: Emma has experience providing clinical supervision to Assistant Psychologists and has delivered training in neurodiversity and eating disorders to professionals and service users.

Emma is an accredited therapist with the IABCP (Irish Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy) and BABCP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy).
