Dr. Róisín Joyce is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner. She holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Oxford University and has more than two decades of experience in adult mental health. Róisín has training and extensive experience in a number of evidence-based psychological approaches including Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Schema Therapy, Dialectic Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and EMDR.
Róisin understands the importance of providing a non-judgemental, compassionate space where people can explore their difficulties and find individual solutions that work for them. She believes in empowering clients to manage their mental health and places significant emphasis on the relationship each person has with themselves. Róisín’s compassionate and authentic approach enable her to build strong therapeutic relationships that facilitate the process of change for those she works with.
Early career and training
After completing a BA in Psychology at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Róisín went to the UK to gain experience in Clinical Psychology. She worked as an Assistant Psychologist in a number of specialities including children and families, where she worked with children and adolescents at risk of school exclusion due to behavioural and emotional problems and in an older adult team, where she worked with people with cognitive and emotional difficulties. She also worked for two years with people with traumatic brain injuries, first as a rehabilitation assistant in a brain injury rehabilitation unit and then as an Assistant Psychologist in the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability, London.
Róisín completed a three year doctoral training at the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology, Oxford University, where she specialised in adult mental health psychology. Since finishing her doctorate in 2005, she has completed a range of additional specialist trainings including Schema Therapy (a treatment approach for complex difficulties), Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy and EMDR, all of which are evidence-based treatments for complex difficulties.
Experience as a Clinical Psychologist
Since completing her training, Róisín has worked as a Clinical Psychologist in adult mental health psychology settings. For seven years, Róisín worked in a NHS multi-disciplinary community mental health team helping clients with severe, enduring and complex mental health problems. In addition, she led specialist psychology services offering brief psychological interventions to people with mild/moderate mental health problems and led on the development of psychological services in oncology and palliative care settings.
Since 2012, she has been working at EBTC, offering specialist psychological assessment and intervention to people with a range of psychological difficulties and distress. Róisín draws on her knowledge and experience to treat a range of problems such as anxiety, phobias, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, adjustment disorders, social anxiety, health anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders, bi-polar disorder, trauma and borderline personality disorder. The variety and depth of Róisín’s training and experience mean she can adapt interventions to suit the individual needs of the person in therapy.
Specialist expertise
Dr. Róisín Joyce has extensive experience working with adults with a range of psychological difficulties that are having a negative impact on their ability to function in the way they would like. She specialises in working with people with recurrent psychological problems and enjoys working alongside people to help them achieve their goals and ambitions. Róisín is passionate about relapse prevention and believes in giving people the tools they need to manage their own mental health, now and in the future.
Róisín believes in enhancing psychological understanding through supervision and teaching. She is experienced in providing supervision and consultancy to other professionals and has been involved in a number of teaching and training programmes. She also shares her insights through podcasts, blogs and professional teaching.
Service development
Róisín is passionate about service development and is continually striving to improve how psychological services are delivered and accessed by those who need them. While in the NHS, Róisín designed and facilitated a hugely successful group for people with bi-polar disorder, helping them to recognise and manage signs and symptoms of relapse. Róisín also took the lead for implementing an intensive group therapy programme for people with emotion regulation difficulties across East Berkshire. Since 2012, Róisín has been continually working to ensure that psychological services at EBTC are as compassionate, efficient and effective as possible.
Memberships
Róisín is a Chartered Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland (P.S.I) and a member of the Division of Clinical Psychology. Róisín is an accredited EMDR Europe Practitioner.
