Mental Health Occupational Therapy Assessment

Your first appointment is a 60-minute in-person Mental Health Occupational Therapy assessment. This provides an opportunity to explore how you are currently managing everyday life, including your routines, roles, responsibilities, relationships, work or study, sleep, self-care, strengths and goals. Your occupational therapist will listen to what is important to you and develop an understanding of how your mental health is affecting your day-to-day functioning and participation in meaningful activities. Together, you will identify the areas where Occupational Therapy may be able to help and begin to develop practical, achievable goals. There is no expectation that you will have everything figured out before your assessment. The assessment is an opportunity to understand and explore what you are experiencing, its impact on your functioning, and collaboratively identify the most appropriate next step.

Laura Hackett is our specialist Mental Health Occupational Therapist. You can read more about her background and experience here.

What Happens After Your Assessment?

Following your initial Occupational Therapy assessment, we will discuss your needs, goals and the areas where you would like support. Together, we will decide on the pathway that is most appropriate for you.

This may involve:

  1. Weekly or fortnightly Mental Health Occupational Therapy sessions to work on your personalised focus areas eg. low motivation, anxiety, low mood, stress, routines, sleep, coping skills, executive functioning or lifestyle balance.
  2. Weekly or fortnightly perinatal Mental Health Occupational Therapy support focused on your wellbeing, adjustment to motherhood, routines, sleep, energy management, coping strategies, or balancing the demands of motherhood with your own needs.
  3. A Workplace Needs Assessment and Reasonable Accommodations Report - where the primary focus is understanding how your mental health or neurodivergence is affecting your workplace functioning and identifying appropriate workplace adjustments.

Your Occupational Therapy plan will be individualised to your needs, goals and circumstances, with the focus on practical strategies that can be incorporated into your everyday life.

What is Perinatal Mental Health Occupational Therapy Support?

Perinatal Mental Health Occupational Therapy provides practical, compassionate support during pregnancy and the postpartum period, when changes in roles and routines, identity, relationships, responsibilities, and daily life can feel overwhelming. Our Perinatal Mental Health Occupational Therapist supports women experiencing difficulties such as postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, anxiety, low mood, stress, burnout, sleep difficulties, overwhelm and sensory overload, as well as women who are finding the transition to motherhood more difficult than expected. Perinatal Mental Health Occupational Therapy focuses on the practical realities of everyday life. Support may include developing realistic routines, managing energy and sleep, balancing competing demands, developing coping strategies, supporting rest and recovery, managing sensory overload and finding ways to balance the demands of motherhood with your own wellbeing.

Workplace Needs Assessment & Reasonable Accommodations

A Workplace Needs Assessment is an Occupational Therapy assessment that explores how a person’s mental health or neurodivergent profile may be affecting their ability to function effectively in the workplace, and identifies practical adjustments that may help them to remain in, return to, or thrive at work.

At Evidence-Based Therapy Centre, this service is provided by our Mental Health Occupational Therapist and is specifically available to clients whose workplace functioning is affected by mental health difficulties or neurodivergence, including conditions such as ADHD and autism. This service is not intended for the assessment of physical or intellectual disabilities.

What does the assessment involve?

The assessment involves a detailed consultation with the employee to understand:

  • Their current role, working environment and occupational demands
  • How their mental health or neurodivergence affects their day-to-day functioning at work
  • Areas of difficulty, such as concentration, organisation, sensory regulation, communication, emotional regulation, fatigue, managing workload or maintaining routines
  • Existing strategies or adjustments that are currently helping
  • Potential reasonable accommodations that could reduce barriers and support effective participation at work

The Occupational Therapist then analyses this information and develops individualised recommendations for reasonable workplace accommodations. A written Workplace Needs & Reasonable Accommodations Report is provided, outlining the identified functional difficulties and recommended adjustments.

Recommendations are tailored to the individual and may relate to areas such as working environment, communication, workload, organisation, flexibility, sensory needs, breaks, scheduling or other practical aspects of the person's role.

Financial Support: Work and Access

The Work and Access scheme provides financial supports to help employers remove barriers and make workplaces more accessible for people with disabilities. The Workplace Needs Assessment Grant can provide up to €2,500 towards the cost of a specialist workplace needs assessment, subject to the scheme's eligibility criteria and approval process.
